Valliant Oklahoma, McCurtain County, Southeast Oklahoma - A Great Place to Live!

Valliant Oklahoma, McCurtain County, Southeast Oklahoma

Valliant OklahomaValliant Oklahoma, home of the annual VALLIANT WATERMELON FESTIVAL,  is located in McCurtain County, Southeast Oklahoma, approximately 20 miles north of Red River which forms the border between Texas and Oklahoma.
Valliant began in 1902 when the railroad was laid through the area and Valliant was one of the depot places.  In fact, it's name comes from one of the railroad engineers.  Frank Valliant.
Valliant Oklahoma Watermelon festivalValliant is a small town on highway 70.  It's major employers are International Paper products and the Public School System. The International Paper plant was originally the Weyerhauser Paper mill, built in the early 1970's.  Everyone was glad to see a major employer come to Southeast Oklahoma and the folks in Valliant particularly glad.

Pine Creek Lake, a major corp of engineer lake is located about 8 miles north of Valliant. It was constructed during the 1960's and brought an influx of people and activity while it was being constructed.  Some people who moved to Valliant to participate in the construction liked the area so well that they just stayed on even after construction ended.   Pine Creek Lake is a great fishing lake and place for families to spend time.  Water sports, water skis, bass fishing, crappie fishing, catfish fishing, all entice the fisherman and there are fishing tournaments on Pine Creek Lake several times a year.  Tent camping, rv spaces, and cabin for rent are all great ways to spend the night or a week-end on Pine Creek Lake.

The "OLD" rock gymnasium has been a part of that school forever.  I kid you not on that one.   Sports provide ample opportunity for team interaction with the school having basketball, baseball, and football.  Agriculture education, an active FFA, technological training, an active participation in the programs offered by the
The Terry Community Building

The Terry-Hunt Community Building was built in the late 1980's or early 1990's.  It welcomes meetings of all types and also is where the library is located.

Even though Valliant's population is only around 750 people, it has a well read weekly newspaper, The Valliant Leader, that is read not only by the Valliant citizens but by the surrounding neighborhoods.  I believe the last time I paid my subscription, it was only $12 or $15 per year.  The paper is well written and a great way to keep up with what's going on in the area.
Milner Hardware and outfitters
Milner's Hardware and Outfitters, Dimple's Flowers, Shirley's Cafe, Bigfoot Cellular, Valliant Telephone Company, and Farm Bureau Insurance Agency  are just a few of the businesses located in Valliant, Oklahoma.  Valliant is also home to two banks, First State Bank, home owned and operated... and McCurtain County National Bank, a local county bank that started out in Idabel and has established branches in other locations around the county.  A local Farmers Market provides a way for those that are growing more than they can handle to, offer those fresh veggies and fruits to others.
Valliant, Oklahoma, a forward thinking small town complete with a good schools system, a major corp of engineer lake, several businesses, a large anchor employer.... a great place to live.
